The Maldives National University (MNU) has signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with two international universities to expand academic and research collaboration, particularly in tourism education.
The agreements, formalised during a signing ceremony held at MNU on Tuesday afternoon, establish new partnerships with The Hotel School Australia, affiliated with Southern Cross University, and Selangor Islamic University of Malaysia.
MNU was represented by Vice Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam, alongside senior officials from both partner institutions.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Shehenaz stated that the agreements would help strengthen the tourism industry and the higher education sector in the Maldives, aligning with international best practices. Nicholas Hyde, Executive General Manager of The Hotel School Australia, added that the partnership would bring mutual advancements to both institutions.
The collaboration centres on MNU’s Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism, aiming to enhance international exposure in academic programmes, joint research, and tourism education. Under the new agreements, students and staff will benefit from exchange opportunities and collaborative research.
The partnership with Selangor Islamic University will also focus on research into regional and international issues, with a specific emphasis on reviving and promoting the religious and cultural traditions of both countries.
University officials noted that these agreements are part of MNU’s ongoing efforts to elevate higher education standards in the Maldives through strategic international partnerships. The collaborations are expected to boost the university’s academic capacity and global engagement.
MNU remains the nation’s leading institution for higher education, offering a wide range of academic disciplines. Students frequently take part in international exchange programmes, including a recent cultural trip by Faculty of Arts students to Cochin, India earlier this month.
