Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, has revealed the Government's objective of transforming the fishing industry into a key export sector that will drive foreign currency to the Maldives.
In an interview with PSM News, Minister Shiyam highlighted that the Government is focused on diversifying the fishing industry, aiming to replicate the success of the tourism sector. He emphasised that numerous opportunities are available for expansion within the fishing industry, specifically pointing to ongoing initiatives to promote mariculture, sports fishing, and reef fishing.
Minister Shiyam also explained that the growth-friendly initiatives by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration has sparked interest in investment in this sector.
Recognising that the ocean accounts for the vast majority of Maldivian territory, the Government has set up a specialised agency to manage the growth of the fishing industry. In addition, initiatives are underway to expand the reach of Maldivian fish products in international markets.
