The Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed, has announced that water storage capacity in the Malé area will be increased by 10,000 tonnes by June 2025.
According to Matheen, the development of the new water storage reservoirs began last year as part of MWSC’s efforts to expand both water production and storage capacity across Greater Malé. Speaking to local media, he said the 10,000-tonne water storage tanks constructed in Hulhumalé have already been completed.
Installation work is currently ongoing for the pumps and pipelines needed to connect the tanks to the existing network. Matheen confirmed that once these works are finalised, the storage facility will be operational by June.
In addition to increased storage, MWSC is also working to boost water production. Matheen highlighted that a new 10,000-tonne water production plant is under construction to enhance supply capacity in the Malé area. Foundation works have already begun and are expected to be completed within the year.
He added that the project was opened to international bidding and the building contract has now been awarded. Parts of the water production plant have already been manufactured, and some materials have been delivered to Malé.
Matheen had also earlier stated that MWSC is replacing Malé’s aging water tanks with two new 13,000-tonne tanks, which will double the city’s total water storage capacity to 26,000 tonnes.
