President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has hailed the ratification of the First Amendment to the Maldives Sports Act as a landmark moment for Maldivian sports, describing it as the start of a new era in the country’s sporting development.
Speaking at a formal ceremony held at the President’s Office, he stated that the Amendment represents a significant and transformative advancement in the development of sports across the Maldives.
In response to questions posed by members of the press, the President elaborated that the Amendment facilitates the establishment of a National Sports Fund. This fund, he noted, will function as a critical instrument for ensuring sustained and enhanced investment in the sector, thereby enabling long-term strategic planning and promoting financial stability within the realm of sports development.
President Dr Muizzu further stated that the legislative reform is anticipated to yield greater transparency and improved governance in the administration of sports. By aligning the sector with the principles of good governance, the Government seeks to fortify institutional structures and create robust pathways for athletes to excel at both national and international levels.
Notably, the Amendment also introduces a legal prohibition against gender discrimination in sports, marking the first time such a provision has been explicitly codified in Maldivian legislation.
In line with this inclusive approach to reform, the President announced the formal recognition of the Maldives Paralympic Committee as an independent legal entity, holding equal status to the Maldives Olympic Committee. He affirmed that this initiative further underscores the Government’s dedication to ensuring equitable sporting opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Addressing matters pertaining to the transition process, President Dr Muizzu acknowledged concerns regarding personnel currently employed by existing sports corporations, which are slated for dissolution under the revised framework. He provided assurances that all affected staff members will be offered alternative employment opportunities. This transition, he emphasised, will be conducted with careful consideration and fairness, with the objective of minimising disruption and facilitating a smooth and responsible restructuring of roles and responsibilities.
