The Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, in collaboration with a Chinese technical team has concluded its feasibility study for modernising the roads in Male’ and Villimale'.
According to the Ministry, a Letter of Exchange for the project was signed on July 23 this year between the Government and China. This agreement facilitated the commencement of feasibility studies, which began on November 4.
The technical study, conducted by Chinese experts, included data collection, site visits, and consultations with relevant ministries, utility service providers, and communication companies in Male’. The ministry confirmed that the research phase of the project is now complete and they are ready to begin designing.
Beyond road development, the project aims to modernise Male's water and sanitation infrastructure, incorporating state-of-the-art designs. The project was initially intended to be funded by the Government, but following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to China in January this year, the Chinese government included the initiative as part of its grant assistance to the Maldives.
According to Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr Abdullla Muththalib, project planning and contractor selection will be managed by the Chinese government and the development is expected to take 3-4 years to complete.
The Ministry emphasised that the modernisation of roads in Male’ and Villimale’ is a significant step toward improving infrastructure and utility services in the Maldivian capital.
