Acting Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has expressed the Maldives Police Service’s commitment to fostering a more transparent and collaborative relationship with the media, acknowledging the need to rebuild communication and trust between journalists and law enforcement.

Speaking at an event aimed at strengthening ties between the police and the media, Naveen stated that the existing relationship had weakened over time and called for greater cooperation. He stressed the importance of sharing timely and accurate information with the public, adding that collaboration with journalists is essential to ensuring facts are communicated responsibly.

Naveen also highlighted the need for responsible journalism, particularly when reporting on sensitive issues that could cause public concern. He noted that misleading headlines and biased reporting have become more common, and urged journalists to prioritise integrity and accuracy in their work.

He stated that the police remain open to constructive criticism from both the media and the public, viewing such feedback as essential to improving the service.

The event, he said, marked a positive step toward building a transparent and accountable media environment where law enforcement and journalists can work together in the public interest.

Naveen was temporarily appointed Commissioner of Police following the resignation of former Commissioner Ali Shujau in April 2025.
