A recently implemented marine biology internship programme, launched by the Baa Atoll Council in collaboration with the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve and Four Seasons Resort at Landaa Giraavaru offers offers students a dynamic, hands-on learning experience that blends scientific exploration with practical training in sustainability and environmental stewardship.
While similar initiatives typically focus on the study and conservation of habitats such as mangroves and coral reefs, this programme not only introduces students to marine life but also incorporates essential lessons in sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
A cornerstone of this initiative is its strong emphasis on renewable energy. At Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, sustainability is woven into the fabric of daily operations, with particular focus placed on reducing environmental impact through clean energy technologies.
During the internship, students were given the opportunity to observe and understand the application of solar power as a means of electricity generation. Through guided demonstrations, they gained insights into the technical processes behind photovoltaic energy and were introduced to the environmental advantages of adopting renewable sources.
The programme also delved into sustainable waste management, showcasing the resort’s efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Students were acquainted with well-established waste segregation systems, plastic reduction strategies, and reuse practices.
Further enriching the educational experience was the introduction to sustainable agricultural practices. Within the grounds of the resort, a dedicated area is maintained for organic farming, where students learned about cultivating fruits and vegetables without the use of chemical fertilisers or synthetic pesticides. The produce grown in this garden is utilised throughout the resort’s dining establishment.
In its entirety, this internship programme stands out for its comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. Rooted in marine biology, it extends beyond traditional ecological education to equip students with a robust understanding of sustainability across multiple domains.
Organised through the collaborative efforts of the Baa Atoll Council, the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, and Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, the initiative serves as a model for experiential learning.
By offering students direct exposure to best practices in environmental conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable agriculture, it cultivates a generation of informed and engaged individuals poised to champion environmental responsibility in their communities and beyond.
