The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) conducted a civic education programme in Laamu Fonadhoo on Saturday, aimed at fostering a democratically engaged society and increasing public participation in the electoral process.

The one-day programme was attended by Elections Commission President Mohamed Zahid and Commission Member Dr Mohamed Zahir. Participants included representatives from Government institutions, companies, associations, political parties, parents, and members of the general public.

The civic education initiative is designed to raise awareness of the multi-party democratic system and encourage responsible civic engagement. It also promotes core democratic values and ethical principles through active community involvement. The programme is structured around four key modules that cover various aspects of democratic participation.

At the conclusion of the session, participants who completed the programme were awarded certificates by the Commission.

The initiative forms part of a nationwide effort to strengthen civic awareness and democratic engagement. The next session is scheduled to be held in Haa Alifu Hoarafushi in June.
