The Saudi government has announced that today, May 28, marks the first day of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, following the official sighting of the new moon.

According to Saudi authorities, the crescent moon was sighted on Tuesday evening, making yesterday the final day of Dhul Qa'dah. As a result, the Day of Arafat, the key day of the Hajj pilgrimage, will fall on June 5, and Eid al-Adha will be celebrated on June 6.

Dhul Hijjah is one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar. The first 10 days are considered the most virtuous days of the year, with Muslims encouraged to fast, perform good deeds, and engage in worship. Fasting during the first nine days is a well-established Sunnah, with particular emphasis on fasting on the ninth day, the Day of Arafat.

Maldivian pilgrims have already begun their journey to Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj. The first group departed on Monday evening, followed by the second group yesterday morning. The third group is scheduled to depart on May 29, and the fourth group on May 30.
