The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has announced that adverse weather conditions will persist in the northern atolls today, prompting an extension of the previously issued White Alert.

The alert, which was initially in effect until 6:00 a.m., has been extended until 12:00 p.m., covering areas from Haa Alifu Atoll to Faafu Atoll. The MET forecasts strong winds between 22 and 27 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour, along with rough sea conditions in these regions.

According to the MET, some islands may experience heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours as part of the ongoing Southwest Monsoon. Weather conditions in the southern atolls are expected to improve from Sunday, while the northern and central atolls may see easing conditions from Monday.

The public has been advised to remain cautious and to closely monitor official weather updates due to the risk of severe weather. The MET also urged seafarers and travellers to take necessary precautions during this period.
