The Ministry of Health has announced a new collaboration with 24 higher education institutions across the Maldives to raise awareness on the importance of blood donation.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry said an agreement will be signed during a special ceremony held in conjunction with this year’s World Blood Donor Day. The initiative aims to promote voluntary blood donation and increase public awareness of broader health issues.

Under the agreement, a series of awareness campaigns and educational programmes will be carried out in partnership with participating colleges and universities. The Ministry stated that the effort is expected to strengthen the culture of regular blood donation and help build healthier communities.

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has already held meetings with the heads of participating institutions to discuss the collaboration and strategies for effective public engagement.

This year’s World Blood Donor Day is being marked under the theme “Give blood, give hope, together we save lives”, highlighting the life-saving impact of blood donation and the power of collective action.

According to Maldivian Blood Services, the Maldives requires 220 pints of blood each week to meet national medical needs. The agency is encouraging voluntary donors to donate every three months to ensure a consistent and reliable blood supply.
