The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed the completion of contact tracing following the recent detection of a meningococcal disease case in the Maldives.
The case, first reported on June 7, prompted the HPA to implement immediate public health measures, including contact tracing, prophylactic treatment for high-risk individuals, and the introduction of additional safety protocols where necessary.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, the HPA stated that all contacts of the infected individual have been traced and tested. No secondary cases or related contacts have tested positive, and no new infections have been reported to date.
Invasive meningococcal disease is a serious but rare bacterial infection in the Maldives. It can cause symptoms such as fever, red spots on the skin, and neck stiffness. In more severe cases, it may lead to meningitis, an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain, or sepsis, a life-threatening condition resulting from the spread of infection in the bloodstream.
