Parliament has approved the appointment of former journalist Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom), filling the vacancy left by Aminath Ameena, whose term ended yesterday.
Six candidates applied for the position. After conducting interviews, the Parliament’s Independent Institutions Committee shortlisted three individuals: Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed, former Public Service Media (PSM) Managing Director Zeena Zahir, and journalist Shimla Ahmed. The names were then forwarded to the full House for consideration.
Zam’ath topped the committee’s ranking and was therefore the first candidate put to a vote. In today’s session, 56 members voted in favour of her appointment, with none opposing. As the required majority was secured, votes on the other two candidates were not held.
Zam’ath brings considerable experience to the role, having previously served as Chief Executive Officer at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. She has also worked with Public Service Media and several private media outlets, strengthening her credentials in the field. She holds a Master’s degree in Journalism.
