The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has announced that the construction of a large, modern mosque in Villimalé has been awarded to a private benefactor who expressed interest in funding the project.

The mosque will be built on the site of Masjid Al-Salaam and is expected to be completed within two years. It will include facilities for Quran classes and other religious education.

Privately funded mosque projects have been increasing in various parts of the country. Two such mosques in Hulhumalé are anticipated to be completed this year, while three more are expected to be finalised in 2026.
