Minister for Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, has described the “Magey Saafu Raajje" National Waste and Resource Management Symposium 2025 as a pivotal initiative to strengthen environmental protection and advance waste management across the Maldives.
Speaking at a ceremony held on Thursday, the Minister emphasised the growing urgency of environmental challenges, stating that the symposium marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to safeguard natural resources and improve waste systems nationwide.
The symposium aims to promote integrated waste management strategies on a national scale, fostering collaboration among key stakeholders and aligning with the government’s broader sustainability agenda.
According to the Minister, a key objective of the symposium is to formulate collective solutions to pressing issues, including unregulated waste disposal and land degradation. He stressed that the event would focus on sustainable resource management and the development of effective waste-handling frameworks.
The Minister acknowledged deficiencies in the Maldives’ existing infrastructure and underscored the need for a coordinated national approach to meet the environmental goals set by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
He added that the symposium fully supports the President’s environmental vision, noting that waste management has been declared a top national priority this year.
Scheduled for July 20 to 23, 2025, the symposium is expected to serve as a national platform for dialogue, policy development, and long-term action.
