The Chief Spokesperson for the President’s Office, Heena Waleed, has reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to democratic values following criticism from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which accused the Government of obstructing a political event.
Heena took to her official X account and highlighted recent actions taken by the Administration to promote democratic freedoms. She noted that, in the past, public gatherings without prior permission were restricted to the Carnival area. However, the current Government has expanded the list of designated areas where political activities can be held freely, now including the Malé Industrial Village, Usfasgandu, and Rasfannu alongside the Carnival area.
Heena also stressed that upholding democratic values requires both freedom and responsibility. She stated that establishing a fully functioning democracy in the Maldives depends on the responsible conduct of political activities and the exercise of free speech in a manner that serves the nation’s interest.
She further called on political leaders to refrain from making misleading statements that could erode public trust.
The Spokesperson emphasised that upholding the rule of law and preserving the democratic system must be grounded in principles of integrity and responsible political engagement.
