The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been granted permission to use Sultan Park for an upcoming event, marking the first instance in which the park has been made available for public use since coming under the oversight of the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure.

Although no formal regulations currently exist for leasing the venue, the Ministry confirmed that the MDP had submitted a request for a venue in Malé to host a public gathering. In response, the Ministry allocated the Sultan Park event area for the party’s use.

The decision comes as the park undergoes a major transition in its administration and future use. Formerly managed by the Malé City Council, Sultan Park was officially transferred to the Ministry on February 19, 2025. The transfer followed a request from the Council, which cited growing concerns over the park's decline and its increasing association with criminal activity due to prolonged neglect.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has since unveiled a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the park, aimed at revitalising the space with modern recreational amenities, integrated smart technology, and design elements that preserve Maldivian cultural heritage.

The initiative seeks to transform Sultan Park into a vibrant, secure public space that reflects the needs of contemporary urban life while honouring national identity.
