The national airline Maldivian has reported that more than 1,800 passengers have travelled under its Southern Connectivity initiative.

The service was introduced in February this year to improve connectivity across the southern atolls, with operations linking Addu Atoll, Fuvahmulah, and the two administrative divisions of Huvadhu Atoll.

Maldivian said that since the launch of scheduled operations in early February, more than 296 flights have been conducted, carrying a total of 1,857 passengers.

Under the current weekly schedule, the airline operates nine flights to Fuvahmulah, six to Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadedhdhoo, and three to Gaafu Alifu Kooddoo.

The routes are operated using DHC-6-300 Twin Otter aircraft, which can carry up to 15 passengers and are suited for short runway operations.

The initiative is expected to strengthen links between Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Fuvahmulah, and Addu, while positioning Gan as a key transport hub in the south.

The service is also set to support medical evacuations and essential travel, reducing reliance on sea transport, particularly during periods of adverse weather. In addition, it is expected to facilitate tourism by enabling easier travel between islands and resorts.
