Dr Ibrahim Shiham, Head of Nephrology at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), has urged the public to consider donating kidneys, describing it as one of the most meaningful and life-changing acts a person can do for someone in need.

In a message shared on social media to mark Kidney Disease Awareness Week, Dr Shiham said a kidney transplant can completely transform a recipient’s life, offering renewed hope and a second chance at living well.

He emphasised that kidney donation is safe when carried out with all necessary medical evaluations and examinations. Donors, he noted, can go on to live long, healthy lives with just one kidney.

He also stated that recovery following donation is typically quick, with most people able to return to full and active lifestyles shortly after the procedure.

Kidney disease remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In Asia, around 34 per cent of the population is affected. The Maldives, too, is witnessing a steady rise in the number of patients seeking treatment for kidney-related conditions.
