The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has unveiled a new insurance scheme aimed at supporting the overseas medical treatment of low-income individuals suffering from chronic illnesses, including cancer.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with Allied Insurance PVT. Ltd, will provide cover for procedures and medication abroad that are not available under the Government’s universal health insurance programme, Aasandha.

Launched with the Islamic new year, the scheme aims to help patients in life-threatening situations where domestic treatment options are insufficient. Ministry officials stated that the insurance would enable beneficiaries to access critical care not otherwise covered.

The measure is part of the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen the national Zakat system and expand its reach. Officials highlighted that record levels of Zakat contributions last year have allowed the Fund to provide significant support to families and individuals living below the poverty line.

In the first quarter of this year alone, the Maldives Zakat House — the institution tasked with managing Zakat funds — allocated over MVR 20 million (approximately Rs 2 crore) to support medical treatment. Assistance was provided to patients suffering from serious health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, kidney failure, and those in need of organ transplants.

The Maldives Zakat House was established in January 2024 following a recommendation by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. It was created to formalise and enhance the country’s Zakat operations and now oversees both the collection and distribution of funds. The institution also continues to provide a range of other support, including annual cash allowances for basic living expenses, financial aid, and funding for Quran and religious education.

The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, voiced confidence in the Zakat House’s growing role, expressing the belief that it is on track to gain international recognition for its contributions to Islamic charitable work.
