The Maldives has achieved a significant milestone in zakat distribution, with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs reporting that Zakat al-Mal for 2025 was disbursed at a higher rate than in previous years. Each eligible recipient received USD 324, exceeding last year’s record of USD 259.
Zakat al-Mal, the obligatory almsgiving prescribed in Islam, serves as a means of purifying wealth and supporting the welfare of society. As one of the five pillars of Islam, it obligates eligible Muslims to contribute a specified portion of their wealth annually to those entitled to receive it, as defined by Shari'ah.
The Ministry announced that Zakat al-Mal funds had been deposited directly into the bank accounts of registered beneficiaries, ensuring timely distribution ahead of the new Hijri year. This initiative aims to uphold the principles of social justice and economic equity embedded in Islamic teachings.
The Maldives Zakat House highlighted that the distribution of Zakat al-Mal has steadily increased over recent years. In 2021, recipients received MVR 2,700 each, rising to MVR 3,000 in 2022, MVR 3,500 in 2023, MVR 4,000 in 2024, and MVR 5,000 in 2025. The 2025 distribution marked the first time Zakat al-Mal was allocated directly to registered individuals before 28 May.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has also announced a revision to the Nisab for Zakat al-Mal. Effective from January 22, 2025, the new threshold has been set at approximately USD 570.83, down from USD 599.39, reflecting fluctuations in international silver markets. The Nisab represents the minimum amount of wealth that obliges a Muslim to pay Zakat, with the Maldives Monetary Authority determining silver prices and the Maldives Zakat House publishing the updated figure.
The Ministry noted that some scholars favour using the price of silver for the Nisab calculation, as it benefits those eligible for assistance by setting a more accessible threshold. The Nisab is reviewed regularly to account for market changes, and a full lunar year must pass from the time wealth reaches this threshold before Zakat al-Mal becomes due. Since June 2016, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has overseen the collection of Zakat al-Mal.
In addition to direct financial aid, the Zakat House continues to provide indirect support, including essential supplies, medical assistance, and targeted help for individuals facing exceptional circumstances. Registration for the national eligibility list has remained open since the Zakat House’s inception, with entries reviewed biennially to ensure fairness and accuracy in distribution.
