National Identity Card printing and issuance services have officially commenced in Haa Alifu Hoarafushi, as part of the Government’s strategy to decentralise essential administrative services across the country.

The Department of National Registration (DNR) stated that with the launch in Hoarafushi, residents will now be able to apply for and receive national ID cards without needing to travel outside the island. The new service is expected to streamline access, reduce delays, and make the process more efficient for local communities.

This development brings the number of islands offering the ID card service to 23. According to the DNR, the goal is to expand the service to all atolls by the end of 2025, ensuring widespread availability of a basic service that is required for accessing a range of government and private sector benefits.

The Government is also preparing to offer ID card services in countries frequently visited by Maldivians. These include Sri Lanka, India, and the United Kingdom. Malaysia was the first overseas location to introduce the service.

The expansion began in November 2024, with the initial rollout outside Malé aimed at bringing core administrative functions closer to communities. The decentralisation of ID and passport services forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to ensure more equitable access to state services across all inhabited islands.
