President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed were honoured at a state banquet hosted by Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and First Lady Mrs Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, as part of the Maldivian delegation’s official visit to Singapore.
Held on June 30, 2025, the banquet marked a key moment in the ongoing state visit, which coincides with the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore.
In his address, President Dr Muizzu reflected on the evolution of bilateral ties, describing the relationship as one that predates formal diplomatic recognition. He spoke of the enduring connection between the two nations, rooted in trade, cultural exchange, and shared aspirations as small island states navigating global complexities. He praised Singapore’s longstanding assistance to the Maldives, especially in technical training and disaster support, and expressed optimism for greater cooperation, particularly in areas such as renewable energy and urban development.
President Shanmugaratnam echoed the sentiment, emphasising the value of building on each country's strengths. He noted the Maldives' prominence in luxury tourism and Singapore’s global standing in finance and trade as complementary assets. The Singaporean President also highlighted the importance of joint advocacy on climate change, a pressing issue for both nations.
The evening included cultural elements and high-level interaction between cabinet ministers and senior officials from both sides, further underscoring the visit’s diplomatic and strategic importance. Earlier in the day, the two leaders unveiled a set of commemorative stamps, jointly issued to mark the milestone anniversary.
