The Maldives’ current foreign policy has been praised as exemplary and advantageous to the nation by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel during the official launch of the documentary Minivan Dhivehi Raajje.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Dr Khaleel affirmed that the foreign policy pursued by the present Government had significantly deepened diplomatic relations with a broad spectrum of international partners. He emphasised that close and cooperative ties had been established not only with major global powers such as China, India, and the United States, but also with nations across the Arab world.
He noted that these strengthened partnerships had directly translated into enhanced access to foreign assistance, which has played a critical role in addressing domestic challenges. Minister Dr Khaleel stressed that such support would remain sustainable only through the preservation of these close diplomatic ties, urging all Maldivians to act responsibly and avoid any actions that could compromise the country’s external relations.
Building on this point, the Minister reaffirmed that the Maldives remained committed to engaging with any nation that respected its independence and foreign policy principles, as long as such collaboration contributed positively to the country’s interests. He observed that the Maldives is increasingly recognised on the international stage for its principled and pragmatic foreign policy framework.
Minsiter Dr Khaleel went on to highlight the Maldives’ growing involvement in international organisations as evidence of the country's expanding global influence. He stated that the Maldives had secured membership in several important commissions and institutions. Among the notable achievements he cited were the country’s election as Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly and its selection to serve on the Governing Council of the Asia and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management from 2025 to 2028.
Underscoring the momentum of these diplomatic gains, the Minister also confirmed that the Maldives would co-chair the 2026 Commonwealth Ministerial Meeting on Small States.
Concluding his remarks, Dr Khaleel attributed the Maldives’ success on the international front to the strength of its bilateral and multilateral relationships. He stated that the deeper and more respectful these partnerships become, the greater the global recognition of the Maldives’ sovereignty and national integrity.
