The Noonu Fohdhoo Island Council is set to benefit from the protected Fohdhipparu lagoon under a joint management agreement.
This announcement was made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to the inhabited islands of South Miladhunmadulu Atoll. Speaking to the residents of Fohdhoo on July 23, the President stated that the lagoon, designated as a protected area by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, would be jointly managed by the council and the Ministry. He explained that the agreement would establish a framework for the site’s upkeep, while enabling the council to generate revenue from its management.
Turning to island development, the President highlighted several projects launched that day. Among them was the construction of a port, a development the people of Fohdhoo have anticipated for more than fourty years. He assured residents that the project would move forward in accordance with their aspirations.
In addition to the harbour, the President attended the inauguration of the new police post and a fitness and recreation centre, further expanding public infrastructure on the island.
Addressing healthcare, the President noted that the quality of medical services would be improved in line with public demand. He stated that, upon completion of the new health centre building, laboratory services would be enhanced, thereby reducing the need for residents to travel to neighbouring islands for treatment.
Concluding his address, President Dr Muizzu expressed his intention to return to Fohdhoo to join the community in celebrating the successful completion of the projects initiated during his visit.
