A total of 140 tonnes of cargo was shipped to six countries through the Maldives’ sea-to-air cargo service in January 2026, according to statistics released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
The sea-to-air cargo service, launched on 15 May 2024, involves the transfer of goods by sea to the Maldives before onward transportation by air to international destinations. The service is jointly operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and MPL.
MPL said cargo consignments were transported by five airlines during the month, with shipments totalling 140 tonnes, equivalent to 26 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The airlines involved in the shipments included Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Swiss Airlines and Turkish Airlines.
According to MPL, more than 17 airlines are now connected to the sea-to-air cargo service, expanding onward connectivity for cargo transiting through the Maldives.
The Government has said the Maldives’ extensive international air connectivity presents opportunities to further expand sea-to-air cargo operations. Authorities have said the expansion of the service has generated revenue for the Maldivian economy and is expected to support broader logistics and trade activity.
