Construction is under way on three major public infrastructure projects in N. Velidhoo: a hospital, a police station and a community drug rehabilitation centre.
The hospital project, valued at MVR 108 million, has been awarded to the state-owned Road Development Corporation (RDC) and is scheduled for completion within 540 days. Once completed, the facility is expected to significantly expand healthcare services for residents of Velidhoo and nearby islands. The foundation stone was laid by Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, joined by RDC Managing Director Brigadier General (Retd.) Ali Zuhair and Velidhoo Island Council President Athif Hussain.
A new police station is also being constructed to strengthen law enforcement capacity and improve public safety on the island. The foundation was laid by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, alongside Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Brig. Gen. Zuhair and Council President Athif. The project is being carried out under the ministry’s supervision.
Construction has also begun on a community drug rehabilitation centre, which will provide modern treatment facilities and structured recovery programmes for individuals overcoming drug addiction. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the centre during his ongoing tour of Noonu Atoll. He was joined by Minister Ihusaan, RDC Managing Director Zuhair and Council President Athif.
The projects is part of the Administration's efforts to improve public services and infrastructure across the country.
