Noonu Velidhoo is set to become more accessible and better equipped for medical emergencies, with new seaplane and sea ambulance services scheduled to launch by January next year.

Speaking to residents during his tour of inhabited islands in Noonu Atoll, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said a dedicated seaplane platform will be established in Velidhoo to enhance the island’s connectivity. The platform will complement wider regional transport efforts, including a planned domestic airport at Vihafaru.

The President also confirmed that sea ambulance services will begin in January, with vessels to be stationed on the island to improve emergency response and medical evacuation capabilities.

The announcements were part of a broader development agenda unveiled during the visit. Practical work officially began on several key infrastructure projects, including a new hospital, a Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre, a boatyard land reclamation project, and a police station.

President Dr Muizzu also addressed a 600-signature petition on harbour concerns, pledging to consult technical experts and include the project in next year’s budget if funding is unavailable this year.

Looking ahead, the President revealed additional plans for 2026, including housing developments, school expansions, and the construction of a futsal stadium and multi-sports facility. Agreements for the sports infrastructure are expected to be signed in September.
