The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced temporary vehicle movement restrictions in the Greater Malé Region from 25 to 27 July 2025, in preparation for events marking the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day.

On 25 July, heavy vehicles classified under categories C0, C2, D, E, and V will be prohibited from operating between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. On 26 July, all vehicles will be banned from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., coinciding with major Independence Day activities. On 27 July, the restriction on heavy vehicles under categories C0, C2, D, E, and V are prohibited  from 6:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m.

The Ministry clarified that only specific vehicles will be permitted on the roads during the restricted hours. These include vehicles operated by security forces, ambulances, and buses, part of the Government’s public transport service. Any unauthorised vehicles found operating during these periods may be subject to enforcement measures.

The vehicle restrictions align with an extensive programme of activities commemorating the Maldives’ 60th year of independence. Celebrations will include floats, parades, military drills, and national flag raising ceremony followed by a series of evening festivities across Malé and Hulhumalé. One of the main highlights will be the official opening of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport.
