Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Maldives’ nationwide 5 Million Trees Plantation Programme during his state visit, planting a mango sapling at Sultan Park in Malé.
The initiative, which aims to plant five million trees across the country over a five-year period, was first announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during the COP28 climate summit and officially launched on World Environment Day in 2024. It is part of a greater national effort to enhance biodiversity, restore degraded green spaces, and strengthen environmental resilience.
According to official figures, more than 595,000 trees have already been planted. Meanwhile, over 6.3 million trees have been pledged by public institutions and private individuals. The Government aims to plant at least two million saplings by the end of 2025.
Authorities have underscored that this campaign marks a shift from previous efforts, with a structured and sustainable approach to tree planting and long-term ecological management. A total of 90 different tree species have been included in the programme.
