The Government of Maldives has officially received 4,000 housing units under development in Hulhumalé Phase II, along with 72 vehicles donated by India, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing state visit to the Maldives.
The symbolic handover took place on 25 July 2025 where Prime Minister Modi presented the ‘Symbolic Key’ to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President's Office. The housing units, developed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation with financial assistance from India through a USD 227 million (MVR 3.5 billion) loan from the Export-Import Bank of India, include 32 residential towers; 16 constructed by NBCC and another 16 by KPIL. Of the total units, 1,200 are two-bedroom flats measuring 650 square feet, while 2,800 are three-bedroom units spanning 900 square feet. The housing initiative is among the largest of its kind in the Maldives and is nearing full completion, with the Government confirming a 98 percent progress rate.
The project, which had previously witnessed delays, has seen accelerated development under the current Administration. The construction pace has increased from a monthly completion rate of 1.73 per cent to 2.78 per cent. As a result, the Government anticipates that residents will begin moving into completed towers within the year. This handover follows the transfer of 700 completed flats in October 2024, during President Dr Muizzu’s official visit to India.
In addition to the housing development, India handed over 72 vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to support defence readiness and operational capacity. The fleet includes 8 buses, 10 pickup trucks, 10 mini-vans, 10 vans, 5 lorries, 8 tractors, 4 tipper dump trucks, 4 backhoe loaders, 2 cranes, 6 mini excavators, and 5 excavators.
These vehicles were donated under a bilateral agreement signed earlier this year during Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon’s visit to India. According to Indian officials, the contribution underscores India’s ongoing support to Maldives’ national development priorities and reflects the strengthening cooperation in the areas of defence and capacity building.
The Government of Maldives expressed gratitude for India’s continued assistance, highlighting that such collaborative efforts contribute meaningfully to national infrastructure development and security enhancement.
