Maldives and India share unbreakable bond rooted in history: President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the Maldives–India relationship as a resilient and unbreakable bond, rooted in a shared history and shaped by centuries of trade, cultural exchange, and regional cooperation.

He made the remarks at a state banquet held on Friday evening in honour of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently undertaking a state visit to the Maldives. The event was hosted by President Dr Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.

Reflecting on 60 years of formal diplomatic relations, President Dr Muizzu noted that the partnership between the two nations goes far beyond diplomacy. He said the Indian Ocean stands as a living testament to the long-standing ties that connect the Maldives and India as neighbours and trading partners.

The President acknowledged that India’s continued support is instrumental in advancing national priorities, including building a dynamic and inclusive economy, empowering youth, and maintaining peace and stability in the region.

He also reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening the relationship, expressing hopes for a future marked by deeper cooperation and lasting prosperity for both nations.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi echoed President Dr Muizzu’s sentiments, highlighting the cultural and historical bonds between the two nations. The Prime Minister expressed India’s dedication to backing the Maldives’ development journey through a strong and respectful partnership.

The banquet was attended by Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Special Envoy and former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and senior Government officials from both sides.
