The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has officially launched a Central Security Command to strengthen surveillance and security across the nation’s prisons.

The new facility, inaugurated on 24 July 2025 by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, is housed in the newly built headquarters of Hulhumalé Prison. The Central Security Command will serve as a central hub for monitoring all correctional institutions in the country. Equipped with a 24-hour CCTV monitoring room, the command centre allows for real-time surveillance and long-term storage of footage from multiple cameras across prison facilities. MCS noted that the system enables swift retrieval and detailed analysis of recordings, allowing for more effective response and incident management.

The key responsibility of the command is to identify and implement improvements in prison security. As part of its long-term plan, MCS intends to integrate artificial intelligence into the monitoring system to enhance efficiency and accuracy in detecting irregularities and preventing the entry of banned substances.

MCS has also said the adoption of advanced technology will improve response times to incidents, reduce contraband smuggling, and support greater professionalism and accountability among correctional staff.
