Maldivians to receive one-year Sri Lankan visas from August

Maldivian nationals will be eligible for one-year visas to Sri Lanka starting 1 August 2025, following a policy change announced by the Sri Lankan government to strengthen tourism and regional ties.
Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced the decision during a tourism exhibition in Colombo. The updated visa policy replaces the current short-term arrangement and is expected to encourage longer stays for purposes such as healthcare, education, and business.
Authorities noted that many Maldivians previously travelled to Sri Lanka for medical treatment, but arrivals declined after the visa duration was reduced in recent years. Recent reports from Sri Lankan media indicated that the number of Maldivians residing in the country dropped from around 8,000 in 2019 to just 1,280 in recent years, with the reduction in visa duration cited as a key factor. The introduction of one-year visas is expected to improve access, support sectors that traditionally rely on Maldivian visitors, and help reverse this trend.
The announcement comes ahead of an official visit to the Maldives by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka and a delegation of senior officials. The visit will include discussions on economic cooperation and opportunities for Sri Lankan hospitality businesses to engage with the Maldivian tourism sector.
