The Maldives has officially set a Guinness World Record for the most venues performing a simultaneous choreographed fireworks display, in celebration of the grand opening of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) on 26th July 2025.

The milestone was announced by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) on X, which described the achievement as a historic moment for the nation.

The coordinated fireworks display, held at multiple locations across the country, was part of the festivities marking the Maldives' 60th Independence Day. This momentous occasion coincided with the unveiling of the long-anticipated new international terminal.

According to MACL, the record-setting event was executed with precision, involving several venues nationwide where fireworks were launched in perfect synchronisation.

The new terminal at Velana International Airport is a major infrastructure milestone for the Maldives, designed to significantly expand the airport’s passenger handling capacity and improve the overall travel experience.

Covering an area of 72,000 square metres, the new terminal introduces several firsts for the Maldives. Among its most prominent features are twelve state-of-the-art aerobridges, the first in the country, aimed at significantly reducing passenger disembarkation times to just eight minutes. The expanded departure area now includes 47 check-in counters and six self-service kiosks, enhancing efficiency and convenience for travellers.
