The RTL ferry service has been officially launched in Baa Atoll, fulfilling President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to expand the service nationwide within the year, as outlined in his Presidential Address.

With this latest expansion, RTL services are now operational across all atolls in Zone 2. The service currently operates on two routes in Baa Atoll using two high-speed ferries. These routes are designed to ensure convenient access to the atoll’s capital island for airport connections and other essential services.

To commemorate the launch in Baa Atoll, free ferry services will be available until 3 August, allowing residents to familiarise themselves with the system. From 4 August onwards, tickets will be required and can be purchased via the RTL website or mobile application.

The launch in Baa Atoll follows the introduction of RTL services in Raa Atoll on 26 June, aligning with the timeline set out by the President earlier this year. He had announced during his Presidential Address that services would begin in Raa Atoll in June and in Baa Atoll in July.

The RTL project is being implemented by dividing the Maldives into six zones, with the aim of connecting islands through an affordable high-speed ferry system.

The RTL ferry service is now operational in 11 atolls. The Government remains committed to expanding the network to the remaining regions as part of its vision to strengthen connectivity and improve access to reliable public transport across the Maldives. Preparatory work is ongoing to ensure RTL services are launched in all remaining atolls before the end of the year.
