Maldives honours Hassan Sobir with State funeral

Hassan Sobir, a distinguished statesman and recipient of the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.), was laid to rest with full State honours on 28 July, following his passing earlier that day.
His funeral took place at Galolhu Cemetery, with final rites performed after Asr prayers. The body was kept at the Islamic Centre for public viewing prior to burial. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, cabinet ministers, and senior State officials were in attendance.
Sobir was serving as the Maldives' Ambassador to Japan at the time of his passing. He had a public service career spanning over 38 years, having held ministerial portfolios in agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. His longest tenure was as Minister of Tourism, during which he played a central role in developing the Maldives' tourism industry.
His diplomatic service included multiple ambassadorial roles, where he was instrumental in enhancing bilateral relations. Sobir was known for his dedication to promoting the Maldives' interests abroad and strengthening international partnerships.
He was conferred the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin on Sunday, during the 60th Independence Day celebrations, in recognition of his long-standing contributions to national development and diplomacy.
His passing prompted condolences from State leaders, former presidents, and political figures, who described him as a dedicated public servant and an advocate for national progress.
