The State Trading Organisation (STO) has initiated efforts to import a new consignment of onions to address the ongoing shortage caused by persistent adverse weather and delays in port operations.

The shortage, which has led to price surges in the local market, follows disruptions in the weekly supply of onions, typically managed by private traders. Rough seas and heavy rainfall have hampered unloading operations at Malé Port, leaving four cargo vessels, including those carrying perishable items such as onions, docked for extended periods.

According to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), unloading operations had commenced for three vessels but were suspended due to severe weather conditions. The port authority stated that cargo handling would resume as soon as conditions improve.

In response, STO confirmed it is sourcing onions from India and working to expedite the shipment to ensure availability in the local market. The organisation stated that the new stock would be released upon arrival and that efforts are underway to ease supply constraints caused by delayed clearances.

STO also reaffirmed its role in maintaining market stability during supply disruptions, having previously imported essential perishable items such as garlic, chillies, and potatoes during similar crises.
