Candidates in the run for Chief Justice post: Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, Shujau Usman and Abdulla Mohamed ---
Three individuals have submitted applications for the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, following the retirement of Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan.
The vacancy arose after Chief Justice Muthasim retired, the first time a Chief Justice in the Maldives has retired with distinction. In response, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) initiated a formal selection process. The application period officially closed at 12:00 p.m. on 29 July, as confirmed by the JSC.
The candidates vying for the top judicial post are former High Court Chief Judge Shujau Usman; former Supreme Court Justice and current President of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Abdul Ghanee Mohamed; and Family Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed, who previously served as Chief Judge of the Criminal Court. The JSC confirmed that only these three candidates had applied before the deadline.
In line with constitutional procedure, the JSC will assess the applications and forward its recommendation to the President. The President must then nominate a candidate to Parliament, which must approve the appointment for it to take effect.
