Cabinet Ministers pay courtesy calls on Sri Lankan President

Several Cabinet Ministers paid courtesy calls on Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka on 29 July, as part of his state visit to the Maldives.

Held at Kurumba Maldives, the engagements focused on reaffirming longstanding ties and exploring opportunities for closer collaboration in defence, trade, development, homeland security, and foreign relations.

Maritime security was a key topic during the courtesy call by Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon. Discussions touched on strengthening bilateral defence frameworks and enhancing cooperation to safeguard the shared maritime domain. Both sides acknowledged illegal fishing in Maldivian waters as a concern and agreed on the importance of greater coordination in addressing transnational maritime threats.

In the area of economic relations, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed discussed ways to deepen trade and investment ties with the President. The conversation highlighted the importance of adapting to global trade dynamics through strategic collaboration. Senior officials from the Economic Ministry were also in attendance.

Diplomatic ties were further reaffirmed during the courtesy call by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel. The discussion focused on strengthening Maldives–Sri Lanka cooperation through regional and multilateral platforms. The Minister was accompanied by the Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka and other senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Homeland security was addressed in the call by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan. Both parties emphasised the need for improved coordination between their respective security institutions. Also present were Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Controller of Immigration Mohamed Faseeh, Commissioner General of Customs Fathimath Dhiyana, and Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer, who discussed mechanisms for enhanced information-sharing and operational collaboration.

Development and financial cooperation were central to the discussion with Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer. The exchange explored long-term partnerships in public investment and economic growth, with both sides noting the value of stable collaboration.

The Deputy Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, also paid a courtesy call on President Disanayaka. In a message shared on X following the engagements, the Sri Lankan President noted that the discussions reflected a shared vision for deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
