The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has acknowledged that many of the essential finishing works required for the 4,000 housing units developed under the government’s housing scheme were not contracted during its administration.
While the construction of the flats was carried out during the previous administration's term, the party has acknowledged that much of the internal infrastructure and operational systems were left unassigned at the time of the transition in administration. These include connecting utilities such as electricity and water, establishing waste management systems, and installing internet, media, and security infrastructure.
Speaking to MMTV, FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel noted that these necessary works had not been formally assigned before the project was handed over to the corporation. In response, FDC is now completing the outstanding components under new operational arrangements. Some towers are reportedly nearing completion, with efforts being made to ensure all requirements are met ahead of the scheduled handover.
According to FDC, the absence of a detailed implementation plan contributed to delays following the structural completion of the buildings. In a statement released, the opposition party has clarified that, while contracting was incomplete, the expectation was for a joint effort between the government and FDC to carry out the finishing work post-construction.
Efforts are now focused on finalising installation of critical services, including CCTV systems, garbage chutes, sanitation, and digital infrastructure. FDC continues to coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure timely and safe occupation by designated beneficiaries.
