The Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced plans to supply fuel and ice to vessels operating from Malé North Harbour as part of ongoing changes to the area.
The company, which took over management of the commercial port and North Harbour in June, now oversees the fish market area and the nearby market crossroads.
With the recent expansion of Malé North Harbour, MPL is working to introduce new services aimed at supporting fishermen and other harbour users.
Speaking to State media, MPL Assistant General Manager Ahmed Hamdulla Rasheed said arrangements are being made to supply ice directly from the harbour at affordable rates and to provide fuel to boats at minimal cost. He added that the fuel service is intended as a support measure for fishermen rather than a commercial venture.
As part of the improvements, MPL also plans to make water, electricity, and ice available from the harbour, with consideration being given to establishing an ice plant or dedicated ice supply point to meet demand.
The expansion project has significantly increased harbour capacity. Malé North Harbour can now accommodate up to 54 vessels, including 20 designated spaces for fishing boats, compared to the previous capacity of 32. An additional waiting zone has been created, allowing up to 25 vessels to queue for berths. This brings total operational capacity to 74 vessels.
This development follows MPL’s recent confirmation that while a docking fee will be introduced in September for vessels berthing near the fish market, fishing vessels will be exempt from the charge.
