During discussions with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today, the Baa Dharavandhoo Island Council raised a range of concerns relating to infrastructure and public services.

The Council stated that the lack of government attention to Dharavandhoo Airport over the past 12 years had resulted in its deterioration and urged that repairs be carried out without delay. It also emphasised the need for a US dollar ATM to improve financial accessibility for residents.

The meeting, held at the Secretariat of the Island Council, brought together the Women’s Development Committee and heads of local institutions. The session provided an opportunity for local representatives to present specific proposals to address both immediate and long-term needs.

Among the priorities outlined was the development of a 30-bed hospital equipped with diagnostic facilities. The Council also requested the expansion of the secretariat building, the creation of an eco-centre and a convention centre to support economic activity, the installation of floodlights at the football ground, and improvements to road infrastructure.

Environmental issues featured prominently in the discussions. Requests included the establishment of a Biosphere Reserve Office to manage Hanifaru, an area of significant ecological importance, as well as the allocation of housing for young residents. Measures to mitigate coastal erosion, such as the placement of geobags in vulnerable areas and the enhancement of sea access, were also highlighted.

President Dr Muizzu assured that the Government would give due consideration to the proposals put forward and provided updates on development projects currently under way. He attended the meeting accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from State-Owned Enterprises.
