More than 70,000 people have sought treatment for mental health conditions at hospitals across the Maldives over the past three years, the National Mental Health Department has said.
The figure was shared on State media by National Mental Health Department Social Service Coordinator Aishath Shuhuza, who cited data compiled from regional hospitals as well as facilities in the Greater Malé area.
Shuhuza said the statistics reflect the number of individuals who accessed mental health treatment during the three-year period. She added that, through efforts carried out last year, 23 individuals receiving care were successfully reintegrated with their families. Several initiatives introduced over the past two years have also contributed to improvements in service delivery, she said.
Deputy Minister of Health Aminath Ismail said that while a comprehensive nationwide study on mental health conditions has not yet been conducted, hospital records and a gaps analysis undertaken in 2022 indicate that one in five people in the Maldives exhibits symptoms of depression. The analysis also identified cases involving thoughts of self-harm.
She said the findings highlight the need for continued attention to mental health services. The Ministry of Health is working with relevant organisations to reduce the prevalence of mental health conditions and expand access to support, while also strengthening human resource capacity in the sector.
Describing mental health as a field with a limited number of trained professionals both locally and internationally, the Deputy Minister said efforts are underway to increase the number of specialists.
As part of measures to strengthen services, treatment for mental health conditions is now covered under Aasandha. The Government has also introduced a dedicated mental health helpline to improve access to assistance for those in need.
