The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that the next phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu Road Development Project will commence later this month, covering the stretch from Presidential Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal.

The upcoming works form part of efforts to modernise sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu that have not yet been upgraded to contemporary standards. The project includes asphalt layering and structural improvements aimed at enhancing durability and traffic flow.

The overall project spans 1,088 metres. In the next phase, 600 metres will undergo sheet piling, while 700 metres will be resurfaced with asphalt and further upgraded. Sheet piling works are scheduled to begin during Ramadan and continue thereafter. Under the current timeline, the full stretch is expected to be completed around April or May.

MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee stated that preparations are now underway to begin works from Presidential Jetty towards the Henveiru Ferry Terminal at the earliest opportunity, with commencement planned toward the end of the month.

Two segments of the project have already been completed. Under the first segment, the road from the Maldives Monetary Authority building to the centre of Republic Square was widened and upgraded to a four-lane carriageway. Works on that segment began on 22 August 2025 and were completed in December last year. The second segment was subsequently finalised, further extending the improved roadway.

The project was awarded to MTCC with a completion period of 400 days at a cost of MVR 144 million.

With the completion of the initial segments, traffic flow in the area has improved considerably. Congestion previously posed challenges for motorists and businesses operating along the corridor. The upgraded carriageway has since eased vehicle movement and enhanced accessibility for commercial activities in the area.
