The State collected more than MVR 221 million in Green Tax revenue in January 2026, marking a 104.8 per cent increase compared to the same month last year, according to statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

MIRA said the total Green Tax revenue collected during the month stood at MVR 221,796,366, up from MVR 108,263,248 recorded in the corresponding period in 2025.

The increase in revenue coincided with higher tourist arrivals. A total of 227,198 tourists visited the Maldives in January, compared to 216,265 visitors during the same period last year, representing an increase of around five per cent.

According to the data, 153,824 tourists stayed at resorts during the month, while 59,813 visitors stayed at guesthouses. A further 6,008 tourists were accommodated at hotels and 4,942 at safari vessels.

Green Tax, introduced in October 2016 to support environmental protection initiatives, is levied on tourists staying at tourism establishments across the country. A tax of USD 12 per night is charged on guests staying at resorts, hotels and safari vessels, while USD 6 per night is charged on guesthouse stays. Children under the age of two are exempt.

The Government has said proceeds from the Green Tax are allocated to environmental projects, including water and sewerage systems, coastal protection works and environmental management initiatives across the islands.
