The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has reported a reduction in improper waste disposal on public streets this year, citing increased public compliance with waste disposal regulations.
WAMCO’s General Manager of Central Operations, Abdulla Shinan, said the corporation has observed higher levels of cooperation from residents compared to previous years. He shared the update during a media appearance, as waste collection operations continue during the Ramadan period.
The corporation said it recently conducted a large-scale cleaning exercise in Malé in collaboration with the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage. WAMCO also acknowledged operational constraints in Hulhumalé but said services are continuing in line with the corporation’s available fleet capacity.
WAMCO said additional arrangements are in place in Hulhumalé to manage waste generated by residents relocating to newly developed 4000 housing flats under the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation project. The corporation said bulky items such as packing materials and cardboard are being prioritised for collection during this period.
To manage increased waste volumes during Ramadan and the first week of Shawwal, WAMCO has implemented revised waste collection schedules. In Malé, household waste is collected between 8:30 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. In Hulhumalé, collection takes place from 9:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., while in Vilimalé, collection is scheduled between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.
