HRCM registers 426 cases in second half of 2025

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) registered 426 cases between July and December 2025, according to statistics released by the Commission, reflecting the volume of complaints received during the second half of the year.
Of the total, HRCM decided to investigate 196 cases. The majority were submitted under the Human Rights Commission Act, with 173 cases accepted for investigation, including 23 cases filed under the Anti-Torture Act.
The Commission concluded 306 cases during the six-month period. One case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office for prosecution, the data showed.
In addition to cases handled under the HRCM Act, the Commission also processes complaints submitted under the Whistleblower Protection Act through its Whistleblower Protection Unit. The Unit received 43 reports during the reporting period. Eight cases were taken up for investigation, while information relating to 23 cases was shared with relevant authorities.
A breakdown of complaints handled by the Unit showed six reports related to failure to comply with legal obligations and six linked to alleged human rights violations, while one case was corruption-related and three were categorised as other complaints. Misuse of state power was the most commonly cited concern. Of the reports received, eight were taken up for investigation and information relating to 23 cases was shared with relevant authorities.
