Chicken eggs recorded the highest clearance volume among perishable food items handled by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) during the first two days of Ramadan, according to daily clearance statistics released by the company.

MPL said perishable food imports are being cleared on a daily basis during the holy month. On the second day of Ramadan, a total of 3,260 freight tonnes of goods were cleared, covering both containerised and conventional cargo. The clearance volume comprised 167 consignments.

Statistics released by MPL show that chicken eggs recorded the highest clearance volume among perishable items during the first two days of Ramadan with 3,658 cases of eggs cleared through the port.

Other perishable items cleared during the same period included 2,165 packages of onions, 1,224 packages of tomatoes, 926 packages of potatoes, 792 packages of pineapples, 600 packages of watermelons, 556 packages of cabbage, 224 packages of bananas, 170 packages of sweet melon, and 122 packages of pumpkin.

MPL said it has implemented operational measures to manage increased cargo volumes during Ramadan, when food imports typically rise. The company has established a 3,000 square-foot shed to support the clearance of perishable goods at the Malé Commercial Harbour.
