Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is set to commence fish procurement from Fuvahmulah City later this month, in its efforts to expand operations and support the local fishing industry.

According to MIFCO, the initiative will be set up at the Fuvahmulah City harbour, with arrangements being made for permanent fish purchasing from the area. The company also confirmed that the Fuvahmulah fish processing centre will become operational this year, enabling residents to access processed fish locally.

This new initiative by MIFCO is designed to make the fishing industry more profitable and sustainable. As part of this expansion, MIFCO plans to begin exporting fish directly from Addu City next month and to start value-adding operations in the region within the year.

In addition, the company is undertaking infrastructure upgrades to boost processing capacity. The Kooddoo Fisheries Complex is scheduled for harbour road repairs and local production factory upgrades, while rapid repair and maintenance work is already underway on the Felivaru cannery. MIFCO also aims to open a fish purchase centre in Thinadhoo by the end of 2026.
